No. All compression happens entirely in your browser using pdf-lib and pdfjs-dist. Your files never leave your device — you can verify this in your browser's Network tab (no upload requests).
How much can I reduce file size?
Reduction varies. Text-heavy PDFs with embedded fonts see the most improvement (30-70%). Image-heavy documents may see minimal reduction — we prioritize preserving quality and accessibility over aggressive compression. If we can't reduce it meaningfully, we tell you honestly.
Will compression affect quality?
You choose the compression level. Low preserves near-original quality; Medium balances size and quality; High maximizes size reduction. Text readability is preserved at all levels. Preview the result before downloading.
Does it work on scanned documents?
Yes, but scanned documents (images) compress differently than text-based PDFs. For scanned docs, compression mainly optimizes the image encoding. OCR compression (making scanned text searchable) is a Pro feature coming Q1 2027.
Is there a file size limit?
No artificial limits. Since processing is client-side, you can compress files of any size your browser memory can handle (typically hundreds of MB). For very large files, we recommend desktop tools.
